CHANDIGARH: The delicacies prepared in the training kitchens of Dr Ambedkar Institute of Hotel Management, Catering and Nutrition (AIHM) will no longer be limited to be savoured by its in-house staff and faculty. Students will cook, serve and wait on you by the end of this year as the institute readies to open its doors to visitors who can dine and stay at its upcoming 22-room hotel and restaurant.

The institute, which is governed by national council for hotel management and catering technology, is coming up with a 22-room hotel, banquet hall and restaurant. The idea behind this Executive Development Centre (EDC) -the second in the country and first in the north for any centrally-governed IHM, is to give exposure to the institute’s students, who also undergo industrial training in reputed hotels or chains. While institutes have attached hotels, IHM Bangalore was the first institute to start an EDC, which is funded by the ministry of tourism.

“The EDC is in its finishing stages and should be ready by the end of this year. It will include 22 air-conditioned rooms, a multi-cuisine restaurant and a small party/banquet hall,” said institute principal Bharti Tyagi.

While a few heads will be hired to supervise the various departments like food and beverage, and housekeeping, the remaining will be managed by students of the institute. “This centre will give actual practical exposure to students, who are otherwise trained in our kitchens. They will learn how to deal with guests and manage affairs like food production, housekeeping, food and beverage on their own,” Tyagi told TOI. She added the EDC will help both kind of students – those who seek employment elsewhere and those who want to set up their own businesses. “Students who wish to start their restaurants will also learn how to manage on a given budget,” she added.

Besides the centre, the institute will also soon get a new block that will include six more kitchens and bakeries.

The funding for the centre was given by the ministry of tourism, which governs the national council.
