Marriott Hotel to Rise beside Harpa
From Marriott’s Edition hotel in London.
Plans are underway to construct a five-star Marriott hotel next to Harpa concert hall in Reykjavík, RÚV reports. The plans were announced yesterday. US real estate company Carpenter & Company purchased the construction site. The expected cost of construction is about USD100 million and the hotel will have about 250 employees. The luxury hotel is expected to begin operation within two or three years.
The new hotel will be part of the so-called Edition brand of hotels, currently operating in New York, Miami Beach, London and Istanbul. Price per night is yet to be determined, but Sandeep Walia, Marriott’s Europe regional manager is certain it will be “on the higher end.” The cost of one night at the London Edition is ISK 84.000 and up (EUR 570 or USD 640).
There will be 250 rooms in the hotel. Management and part of the staff will come from abroad, but the rest of the staff will be Icelandic, such as waiters and cleaning staff. Employee training begins one year ahead of the scheduled opening. The hotel will include a restaurant, a bar on the roof, and a spa. Construction begins this winter.
