A Guernsey hotel has been closed because of an outbreak of highly contagious Norovirus.

Two further cases of the vomiting and diarrhea bug were confirmed last night and managers decided to close the Peninsula Hotel to residents and staff.

A complete deep clean will now take place and it is hoped the hotel can reopen by the weekend.

The outbreak at the 99-bedroom hotel began at the weekend when several residents were taken ill. More than 50 bookings had to be relocated elsewhere on the island, the restaurant was closed and private events were cancelled.

“The health of our hotel guests and of islanders generally is our absolute priority. We have decided that closure is necessary to have the whole place cleaned to the highest clinical standards. Staff have been given two days off and we are hopeful that we can be re-opening by the weekend.

– John Langlois, Chairman of the company that owns the Hotel”

Experts from Guernsey’s Health Department have been working closely with the hotel’s management to offer support, advice and sanitising help.
